GETTING BROADBAND CONNECTED

Many internet service providers, and other organisations, are in a position to supply broadband services.  Remember Broadband is an "always on" service and is therefore contract only.  It would be wise to install a good Virus Guard and Firewall software.

OTHER RELATED INFORMATION

What is Broadband?

Broadband is a fast way to connect your PC to the Internet. Most broadband connections are 512 kbps, makes your connection approximately 10 times faster than conventional dial-up Internet connections. The other key point to make about broadband is that it allows both Internet and telephone calls to take place simultaneously on the same telephone line.

What is ADSL?

ADSL is the technical term for broadband. ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It transforms a  pair of wires between a local telephone exchange and a customer's telephone socket into a high-speed digital line. It is called "asymmetric" because it moves data more quickly from exchange to customer than from customer to exchange. This makes it particularly suitable for applications where customers expect to receive more data than they transmit, such as use of the Internet.

What does it mean to me?

It means that web pages will load a lot quicker than they do with a conventional "dial up internet service".  They will appear almost instantly. It also means that you can download large files faster than you can at the moment - this includes video clips, games and programme downloads.  You will also be able to send and receive emails with large attachments faster too.

What do the speeds mean?

Your basic standard dial-up connection is typically 56 kbps (kilobit per second). Most broadband connections are 512 kbps which makes it approx 9.1 times faster than a dial-up Internet connection - this is usually quoted as being 10 times faster.  Some internet providers will also offer faster or slower Broadband services at different pricing packages - see www.broadbandchecker.co.uk and www.broadbandsuppliers.co.uk

How will I be able to use Internet and Phone together?

Broadband enables both telephone calls and your Internet connection to operate on the same phone line simultaneously, with the aid of a filter (sometimes known as a splitter) which is simply plugged into the phone socket that is being used for both telephone and Internet at the same time.  A filter separates (or splits) the telephone signal from the broadband signal, therefore allowing both to work at the same time.

What else will I need?

A modem and a data cable, which most Broadband suppliers include with their package.  You will also need a broadband filter for every telephone socket in use (phone, fax, dial up modem, answer machine, bell, interactive sky television, etc.), most suppliers provide a couple of filters and will sell you extra, or they can be bought from suppliers in the high street.
