The results of the Survey conducted in October 2004 have now been discussed by Stelling Minnis Parish Council and are given below.

Some forms were returned by individuals and others by households. In the latter cases I have treat Mr. & Mrs. as two replies. Also there were a few replies from Bossingham and Elmsted which I have included.

Source of replies                                    No of Forms                  No of people

            Parish News                                           36                                50

            Pro-forma                                             29                                 40

            Web site download                                 2                                  2

TOTAL                                                             67                                92

Result

22 people wanted 30 mph limits everywhere, 2 wanted no speed limits, and the rest wanted a combination of 30 and 40 mph limits.

I have not included Stone Street as it was not specifically asked for, although some people did express a view - see notes below. Also one or two people put 20 mph but for simplicity I have treated these as 30 mph in the table below.

Stretch of Road                   Preferred Speed Limit

60 mph (as now)   40 mph   30 mph

1. Bossingham Rd. to junction                            13         56        23

2. Bossingham Rd junct - Mill Lane                       3         34         55

3. Minnis Lane junct - R&C                                  2          2         88

4. Minnis Lane R&C - Curtis Lane                         2           0        90

5. Curtis Lane Stone St.-junct.                            8          8         76**

6. Curtis Lane junct.-Mill Lane                            2           4         86

7. Bossigham Rd.-WbTown                                 2         18         72

8. Wheelbarrow Town                                     11         13         62

** Curtis Lane - There were variations in where a limit should start

Notes

1. Although not intended to be covered by this survey 24 people marked Stone Street - 8 for 50 mph, 14 for 40 mph, and 2 for 30 mph.

2. 3 people suggested that the 30 mph limit at the school should be reduced to 20 mph

3. 2 people wanted a 20 mph limit in Mill Lane, 1 put 20 mph by the shop, and 2 suggested 5 mph in Crown Lane

4. 2 people commented that cutting back trees and bushes along the roads would improve road safety.

The plan being put forward by the Parish Council takes into account the wishes of the majority and is for an overall speed limit of 30 mph within the survey area, except for the straight bit of Bossingham Road accross the Minnis which would be 40 mph.

UPDATE

September 2006:  Parish Council chairman reported to Parish Council meeting that progress was being made on a 30mph limit in the Village centre.  However this was still subject to survey and funding.  Minnis Managers and local residents were being approached with regard to siting of speed limits signs in Bossingham Road and Curtis Lane.  See October Parish Magazine.

In October 2006 the KCC Councillor advised the Parish Council:-

That at last we have been successful in our bid for a 30mph limit in the village. The signs are being ordered and the installation is scheduled for April 2007. So, fellow motorists, we have six months to get used to the idea and adjust our driving to the 30mph speed limit before it is actually implemented. I have no doubt that the area covered will not please everyone, particularly the residents of Wheelbarrow Town where it will not apply. It is what the great majority of the community had requested. It is a step forward.

28 November 2006 KCC provided a plan of the actual locations of the 30mph signs, which will be placed on both sides of the road. Formal traffic regulation order advertising will be placed in local newspapers from the beginning of December.  Click here to view plan (Note: this may take a while to load and display - please be patient)

July 2007 -    Formal notice has been issued and speed limits will be introduced in July 2007
